Area families will get the gift of nutritious food, thanks to The GIANT Company’s gift to Geisinger’s Fresh Food Farmacy program. Because the COVID-19 pandemic has placed a strain on food banks and food-insecure families across the state, the $200,000 gift from The GIANT Company will help sustain and expand the program. Through partnerships with local food organizations the Fresh Food Farmacy provides fresh, healthy food to patients and their families for up to 10 meals per week. Since 2017, Geisinger’s Fresh Food Farmacy has provided more than 706,000 meals to more than 4,800 (4,828) families in the Lewistown, Shamokin and Scranton areas. A $1 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant was awarded for the NuVisions Center, a nonprofit corporation based in Lewistown. The project involves the acquisition of an existing building within the area served by NuVisions to accommodate both manufacturing and office space. The project would be designed to allow for truck traffic access for delivery and shipping purposes as well as provide adequate parking for staff, clients and visitors. Representative John Hershey (R-82) toured the existing center to learn about how NuVisions provides client services and employment opportunities and said their facility will benefit everyone. RACP funding can be used for acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.
